Advanced control Model predictive control State estimation Wind & tidal turbines Hybrid energy systems

Luis Recalde-Camacho is a control engineer and researcher with expertise in advanced control and estimation methods for renewable energy systems. His work spans wind, tidal and hydro power applications, with a strong focus on model-based control, nonlinear dynamics and uncertainty-aware decision making.

A central theme of his research is the application of model predictive control and estimation techniques to energy conversion systems operating under highly variable environmental conditions. This includes the design of controllers that explicitly handle constraints, nonlinearities and multivariable interactions, while remaining suitable for real-time implementation.

In wind energy, Luis has worked on the estimation of anomalous wind conditions and the control of wind turbines operating beyond standard assumptions. His research includes modelling and control of floating wind turbines, where platform motion, aerodynamics and control interactions must be addressed simultaneously. He has also contributed to the control of turbines with aero-elastically tailored blades, linking structural flexibility with control objectives.

His work extends to non-conventional turbine concepts, including vertical-axis and cross-flow configurations such as the X-rotor, where nonlinear aerodynamics and coupled dynamics require tailored control strategies.

Beyond wind, Luis has applied similar modelling and control approaches to tidal turbines and hydropower plants, as well as to the design and optimisation of hybrid energy systems combining wind, solar PV and battery storage for multipurpose and remote platforms.
